WELCOME TO NU’UANU BAPTIST CHURCH

Nu’uanu Baptist Church is diverse in age from nursery to senior adults. Our children are actively involved in missions, leading the church in projects like our Seafarer’s Ministry and Christmas in August offering. Our youth and young adults have worship during the week (Wednesday and Friday) and have grown in number and in faith. They bring community and family to the whole church through their participation on sports teams, in prayer meetings, and their energy in reaching out to their friends.

Nu’uanu is a church with ministries to care facilities, low-income housing, to the hungry, and families of prison inmates. Nu’uanu is also a missions-minded church supporting financially to missions in North America and overseas. Mission teams have also traveled to Japan, Thailand, and Saipan.

Nu’uanu has a strong witness through her preschool. The preschool has a balance of academics and Christian teaching. We also were awarded the “Preschool of the Year” in 2017 by the Hawaii Baptist Early Education Association.

We are grateful for the family atmosphere in the church with interaction between our older members and our younger members; our older members mentoring and encouraging and our younger members providing energy and passion. We invite you to come and experience it for yourself.

Please join us on Sunday mornings for our 9am family service followed by Sunday School at 10:30am. We would love to have you!

Pastor Bob Gierhart

KEIKI MINISTRIES OF NU’UANU BAPTIST CHURCH

Nursery

The church nursery is a ministry by caring and competent workers who find joy in serving our families.  They will care for the little ones from birth to three years old so these parents may participate in worship without distraction.  The nursery is provided during the worship hour (from 9:00 am) and Sunday School (from 10:30 am).

Mission friends

Mission Friends is a ministry to children ages three to five years old during the worship service time (from 9:00 am).  Parents are able to attend the worship service, while their children are in a nearby classroom learning about God’s love for them and the people of the world. There are games and stories for the children.

Children in action

Children, ages 6-11, join their parents in worship at 9am and then make their way to the 2nd floor of the sanctuary where they participate in Children in Action.  During this time, they participate in Bible study, mission projects and other activities where they learn about and pray for the work of missionaries.

our-history

OUR HISTORY

Nu’uanu Baptist Church was begun and led for several years by foreign missionaries whose presence in Hawai’i was largely due to World War II and the subsequent Communist takeover of China. Former missionaries to Asia were transferred to Hawaii and new work was begun here.

In October of 1941 three missionaries, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Blackman and Miss Alice Huey rented a two‐room shop on School Street.  Soon the shop was outgrown and in August of 1942 land was purchased where the auditorium now stands. Because of war restrictions on building, a large tent was erected. A Vacation Bible School was held immediately with helpers from Olivet, the sponsoring church, and 111 were enrolled.

On April 18, 1943 Nu’uanu Baptist Mission officially became Nu’uanu Baptist Church.  On April 18, 2018 Nu’uanu Baptist Church celebrated it’s 75 anniversary of ministry in Honolulu.  Our mission has always been to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to people in our community, nation and around the world.
