OUR HISTORY

Nu’uanu Baptist Church was begun and led for several years by foreign missionaries whose presence in Hawai’i was largely due to World War II and the subsequent Communist takeover of China. Former missionaries to Asia were transferred to Hawaii and new work was begun here.

In October of 1941 three missionaries, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Blackman and Miss Alice Huey rented a two‐room shop on School Street.  Soon the shop was outgrown and in August of 1942 land was purchased where the auditorium now stands. Because of war restrictions on building, a large tent was erected. A Vacation Bible School was held immediately with helpers from Olivet, the sponsoring church, and 111 were enrolled.

On April 18, 1943 Nu’uanu Baptist Mission officially became Nu’uanu Baptist Church.  On April 18, 2018 Nu’uanu Baptist Church celebrated it’s 75 anniversary of ministry in Honolulu.  Our mission has always been to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to people in our community, nation and around the world.
